We begin the series of Webnode success stories with an interview with Marcelo Paixao, creator of the Brazilian hit website futexcel.com.

Marcelo created his Webnode site in March 2010. A fan of football and Excel, he created a Brazilian Betting Pool with the help of social networking, media attention, and downloading sites. One of the most respected magazines in Brazil, the Journal Review, chose him as the most sophisticated Brazilian Betting Pool. Reputable sites like Baixaki, SuperDownloads, Softonic began to share his tables.

Today, his betting pool is used by the journalist Rica Perrone (globoesporte.com) to carry out the so-called “Pool of the Famous” involving more than 100 celebrities from all over Brazil.

How did you get the idea of creating your website?

I wanted to share with others what I do best. I am passionate about football and Excel, and felt that the tables that exist on the Internet could be improved. I researched my competitors and I decided to innovate. So I created my website in order to share my own tables.

Why did you choose to share your tables on Webnode?

I was glad for the possibility of having a website in 5 minutes for free and without advertisements. This saved me a lot of time. Webnode is the best choice in my view, especially for beginners. Even kids can create an awesome website by dragging and dropping widgets.

Did the Webnode system help in publicizing your site?

Webnode is very complete. It gives me the chance to easily share my articles on both social networks and through RSS. I can also add Webnode widgets or just insert an HTML code in the Embed code tool to further enrich my page.

What are the SEO techniques you use for your site?

I use lots of link building techniques in social networks. I share my tables in directories, downloading sites, a mini-blog and a fan page, adding links that refer back to my pages. If there are various places to share the tables and they have lots of downloads, users will eventually visit my site and express interest in my site and my work. These backlinks greatly help my site to get a better ranking on Google. I also use Social Bookmarking and the basics, such as meta-tags, keywords, etc.

What is the importance of Google for your business?

I use almost all of the tools but Google Analytics is essential for my strategy development. I can use it to analyze my page hits, so I can improve these pages and add what’s most important. I also use other tools such as Google Webmaster tool, as well as Adsense. Google is certainly important for my business.

What is your position on Google for your keywords and how do you choose?

I find my website on the first page for search terms like “betting pool” or “football tables excel.” I always look first in Google tools (Google Keywords Tool), for the keywords that are searched more and try to specify them because if you enter Google “Excel”, there are millions of results and competition is high. Then I put, for example: “excel tables liberadores”, “Brasileirão tables in excel”, “Euro excel tables”, etc. It’s more specific, and you’re doing something authentic and different. I try to see the competition, look at what they do and see where I can be different.
