November 15th, 2012

In the article « 10 things people hate to find on your site » you read what things you should avoid putting on your website, so visitors won’t get scared and leave your web page. Let’s start with the first, widely disliked – pop-up windows – and learn how to apply it in a friendly manner!

Do you want a pop-up on your site? Find the best ways to do so.

The best use of pop-ups – no pop-ups.

This must be the rule! If you’re not 100% sure you need such a window, you don’t need it. Numerous sites lose visitors every time an unexpected window opens, making them angry and leading them to close the window..

If you think your site will benefit from using a pop-up window, try our tips:

Tip 1. A pop-up window that doesn’t block content

There isn’t one thing more annoying than a pop-up window that blocks the entire page on which you were hoping to find the necessary information.

What to do?

  • A good solution in this case may be for example, to add a window where visitors subscribe to your site which is displayed in the bottom right corner without blocking content on the site and engaging your visitor at the same time.

Tip 2. A pop-up window that blocks content, but remains simple

In some cases you need a pop-up window to block a page of interest, for example to redirect visitors to another site or to inform that content is reserved only for adults.

What to do?

  • Try inserting a window that’s not aggressive, just simple and informative. Discover how to do it easily in our article How to create a pop-up window.

Tip 3. A pop-up window that opens by clicking

This pleasant solution allows your precious visitors to choose whether they want to see a pop-up window.

What to do?

  • Insert in your link a code for a new window of a specific size to be opened with a click. You can use this method to show visitors pages or images with additional information.

Try how it works in this article directly, by clicking on the link in the following example.

In continuation of the series Turn “CON” into “PRO” you’ll find – Best use of music and video on startup .

<p>In continuation of the series Turn “CON” into “PRO” you’ll find – <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”><a onclick=”‘’, ‘okno’, ‘width=550,height=510,status=no,toolbar=no, menubar=no,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes’);” href=”javascript:void(0)”>Best use of music and video on startup</a></span>.</p>

  • Change the parameters in «width=550,height=510» (largeur/hauteur) to change the window size;
  • Replace the link «» with your own link.

How to apply it in Webnode?

When you edit content in the « Text and images » block, you can also see the HMTL version where it’s possible to add the codes similar to those in the previous two examples.

Click the arrow to see the « Source » option

Make sure that all the characters and code symbols remain as they are. The code will not work if you change something.

Have you changed your opinion on the use of pop-ups?
